Hi boys wanna have some fun?(Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie via cerebral museum)
but I would totally go gay for Winona Ryder in this photo. In fact, I'm gay for her at this very moment.
So excuse me while I post a couple of quotes from their 1999 movie, Girl, Interrupted:
Susanna (narrating): ...Maybe, there's a moment growing up when something peels back... Maybe, maybe, we look for secrets because we can't believe our minds...
-----
Lisa: Take one fuckin' step and I'll jam this in my aorta. [aiming a pen at her neck]
Valerie: Lisa, your aorta is in your chest.
Lisa: Good to know.
-----
Susanna: [reading from a book] "Borderline Personality Disorder. An instability of self-image, relationships and mood... uncertain about goals, impulsive in activities that are self-damaging, such as casual sex."
Lisa: I like that.
Susanna: "Social contrariness and a generally pessimistic attitude are often observed."
[pauses]
Susanna: Well that's me.
Lisa: That's everybody.
(Note: Lisa was Angelina, Susanna was Winona)
-----
Fucking amazing, IMO. Haha.
And if you haven't watched this movie yet, go watch it! Buy it somewhere and watch it! You have to!
Ok. Enough about fandom.
What have I learned lately?
I learned that while most of the time I refrain from making wishes or imploring to the universe to give me something that I want because it may just result to fail-- the universe knows, and gives me exactly what I'm most afraid to ask at the very moment when my insides are saying, ask, ask, the universe is listening.
What was it that author Paulo Coelho said? That when you really want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it?
I learned that I am still very bad in math.
I learned that cookies and cream ice cream tastes a lot better when a friend surprises you with it in your station! (Thank you!)
I learned that when in doubt, mumble. Or speak in Tagalog.
I learned that if you don't want to forget a secret that must remain a secret, tumble it, and get on with life.
I learned that even though temporary fixes may be temporary, they do keep things from breaking to pieces, from completely falling apart. Sometimes, it's the temporary fixes that keep things together. Things, like maybe you, and me. Which isn't so bad right?
I learned that if you put me on prolonged solitary confinement without access to the internet or books or my phone I would totally go bonkers.
Which is exactly why I have my new neighbors to thank rite? Thank you new neighbors, for sharing your intarnuts. You don't know it (oh no you don't) but you guys make sanity possible on Sundays and Mondays.
What I still don't get:
Tumbularity
Purple skinnies
Formulas
That stupid song that goes mga tambay lang kami sawa sa babae
All Rihanna songs translated to Tagalog
All hit songs translated to Tagalog for the love of god stop it already.

the fear in me is strong
and I love you
No one had to fend,
to fold, to see
with me
tonight
I went to church today. It seemed like today was a good day to pray, or have some semblance of communication with The Unseen Hand that supposedly has a say in everything that happens in this universe. I've become a bit wary of conversing with this higher power for a time now. Maybe I've lost my religion, or maybe my religion has lost me. More often than not I've found myself not knowing what to ask for-- not that I've run out of things to ask for, because there's a lot-- but I don't know. Maybe I still don't know what I want. Or maybe I'm just afraid to ask? Because I might not get it. Or I may just get it, and then not know what to do. Like now.
Ends when you change your life
Give you my soul, as long as you find your way
Starts when you fall and ends when you change your life
Give you my soul, as long as you find your way to shine
to shine
I sure hope the higher power is listening. Maybe He (or She) will consider using His (or Her) upper hand this time? And point me To Somewhere More Than This?

A few days ago I finished reading Haruki Murakami's After Dark. Here's an excerpt:
"You know what I think?" she says. "That people's memories are maybe the fuel they burn to stay alive. Whether those memories have any actual importance or not, it doesn't matter as far as the maintenance of life is concerned. They're all just fuel. Advertising fillers in the newspaper, philosophy books, dirty pictures in a magazine, a bundle of ten-thousand-yen bills: when you feed 'em to the fire, they're all just paper. The fire isn't thinking, 'Oh, this is Kant,' or 'Oh, this is the Yomiuri evening edition,' or "Nice tits," while it burns. To the fire, they're nothing but scraps of paper. It's the exact same thing. Important memories, not-so-important memories, totally useless memories: there's no distinction--they're all just fuel."
"You know, I think if I didn't have that fuel, if I didn't have these memory drawers inside me, I would've snapped a long time ago. I would've curled up in a ditch somewhere and died. It's because I can pull the memories out of the drawers when I have to--the important ones and the useless ones--that I can go on living this nightmare of a life. I might think I can't take it anymore, that I can't go on anymore, but one way or another I get past that."
Yeah. I liked this part so much I typed and posted it via my mobile phone.
Ah, memories.
The time he asked if I was hungry and I said no, not really while eyeing the hotdogs and waffles and then telling him later while munching on the same hotdog and waffle that di ako gutom gusto ko lang ngumuya ("I'm not hungry I just want to chew") and that look on his face, what a funny.
Swimming with the whale sharks.
The kid pressing his face in the coffee shop's glass windows.
Sunlight streaming through the windows.
That time, accent training for my first (and last) call center job-- when I stupidly misread compromise as "com-promise".
My dog Sugar giving me that sad, sad look that morning he died.
Not waking up in my own bed.
Anna Nalick singing, but, my god, it's so beautiful when the boy smiles.
HongKong, Singapore.
That "Chika-Chika" song playing in the FX on my way home.
Tonight's argument with my mother.
Burn, burn, burn.

Which I can not do because I like to appear Meg Ryan-y as often as I can: quirky, funny, and pretty (yes?). And on those days that I can't I'll just fool you with my multiple personality problems. Or some random reference to alcohol.
Anyway.
I'm liking Tumblr so far. A lot of awesomecakes people there, and the photos, the photos are love, love, love!
I so want a vintage-y bicycle.

I AM SO GONNA CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE.
The movie adaptation of Maurice Sendak's award-winning children's picture book Where the Wild Things Are is coming to theaters near me this year!
So lucky to have stumbled on this on wecouldgrowup2gether's fabulous blog (thanks much!)
Watch the trailer here.
"Inside all of us is a wild thing."
Indeed.

25 Random Things About Me:
1. There's this great burger joint in Kapitolyo, Pasig that I frequent with my friends -- Charlie's. I swear the burgers there are made of sin.
2. I'm not really sure if I like marriage -- in fact, last week, while attending my friend's church wedding I was almost sure that I was developing an aversion to marriage. Sure I think weddings are romantic ceremonies, but I don't know, I'm kinda not very excited about the whole tying the knot thing. But if I absolutely just have to get married, it has to be a beach wedding, with everyone barefoot, and with a cool master of ceremonies (a pastor a priest whoever) who won't drone on about how family planning is an act of evil (obviously I have issues here haha).
3. I'm currently agnostic. I'm open to a spiritual experience but I'm not very keen on anything that will involve religious rituals and what have you.
4. I cried the first time I watched Land Before Time (you know, that cartoon about dinosaurs?)
5. I'm a fan of Korean cinema and television. In fact it's fairly safe to say that I get my romantic flick fix from Korean films like Ditto, Sad Movie (yes, it was sad alright), The Classic, and Madeleine, and Korean TV series like Goong (Princess Hours) and My Girl. I can drone on about this like the fan girl that I am but let's move on to number 6.
6. I love canned tuna. Because I don't really cook (I can if I wanted to but I'm too lazy) my meal would usually consist of hot and spicy tuna mixed with crushed plain crackers or, any other flavored canned tuna on whole wheat bread.
7. I once tripped and fell to my knees in the middle of a busy street (that street just off the gas station at the end of Shaw Blvd.). In my red, 4-inch pumps. Yessir, I literally stopped traffic.
8. My favorite way to sleep is in my undies and an oversized and old men's shirt. Pajamas are good too, but only during the cold season. :)
9. Speaking of sleep, I cannot sleep without a blanket. I can without a pillow, but I must, must have a blanket. I do blankets even when the weather's hot.
10. I'm absolutely in love with Katy Perry's Thinking of You. The lines "you're like an Indian summer in the middle of winter, like a hard candy with a soft center" just about perfectly sums up some stuff in my life right now haha.
11. I tried being a vegetarian before. I only lasted 2 months. I love animals really, pigs and cows included -- but I can't stay away from burgers. And sisig. And fried chicken. =(
12. I cannot be happier with the friends I have right now.
13. I've never been a watch person. But after accompanying a friend selecting and buying (after 5 hours of looking!) I suddenly developed a desire to have one. Not one of those cutesy ladies' watches, but rather a men's chrono watch that will swallow my wrist and make hand flailing a chore. I want it for my birthday!
14. I prefer drinking hard drinks over beer. I used to outdrink everyone -- including all my hard drinking guy friends and never get hangovers. But now, I've uh, mellowed.
15. It's a wry sense of humor over good looks for me when it comes to men. But if I can have both, so much the better. Haha.
16. The very first novel I read was Mario Puzo's The Godfather. That was when I was in fourth grade.
17. I'm a real good listener. If there was an award like some sort of Grammy's for best listener (categories would be problems, fantasies, drunktalk, nonsense, and chismis) I would be a forerunner. I once told a friend, this is both my blessing and my curse.
18. I love being a stranger in a strange place. (I'm going to Singapore next month!)
19. I have a temper but I can never hold on to a grudge. All my friends who have known me for a long time know this and abuse this fact on a constant basis. =P
20. I won this Acer Aspire One notebook in our company Christmas Party last year. I never win in raffles, not even in those tickets they sell compulsary for P10 a bunch during grade school. But that night when they were drawing out the winners and I was on my way to the rest room to fix my face I actually heard a voice in my head saying my name before they called out my name. Really. Was it my imaginary friend talking to me? I don't know. haha.
21. I seem to always find myself drawn to men who are intelligent but emotionally daft.
22. I'm near sighted. If we know each other and pass each other and I don't smile that's because I couldn't see you. My eyes are L-375 and R-325.
23. I always have trouble sleeping early.
24. Plots, settings, dialogues, characters, and sound tracks run in my head constantly but I can't sit down and just put them all down and organize them into a story. Someday I'd love to be able to come up with a screenplay for a film or tv series.
25. I want to have Johnny Depp's babies.

You know, I can take being hit by a 1-liter bottle (that was half-full -- yes, I'm an optimist!) of mineral water in the chest while screaming marriage proposals to Bamboo Mañalac (on hindsight that might have been the universe's way of telling me that no child, marriage material you are not) but the thought of getting whacked or squished to death while singing along to Tindahan Ni Aling Nena isn't exactly a very thrilling idea. Yeaaah, I know I know, it's a rock concert not a funeral so people are bound to get crazy. And it's the Eraserheads, not your granny's favorite chacha singer (where the hell did I get this) for crying out loud.
Well.
Maybe I'll just hang around The Fort Bonifacio grounds somewhere and be like, was there.
Maybe.

Don't Mess With The Zohan was a chuckler -- it wasn't as funny or as enjoyable a comedy as one might expect a plot of an Israeli commando having the secret wish to be a hairdresser. Sure Adam Sandler did a lot of flashing in the movie, there was the smattering of politically incorrect humor (which is fine but it didn't quite work here), and Zohan's humping the geriatrics but overall I found You Don't Mess With The Zohan boring and quite forgettable. So unless you're big on Adam Sandler or just want to see how he carries on with a Mariah Carey shirt well, don't mess with this movie. It's not even half as funny as its poster.
Meanwhile, on the local front, I hear from Helga that tadaaa, our local showbiz is attempting "our" version of that hit TV series Gossip Girl (which I haven't gotten around to watching yet). Is anyone surprised? No? Truth be told people, we may have this paralyzing fear that if we so much as think of thinking of something original our brains will implode. That's how hard it is, so we Filipino citizens, should make do with remakes -- Marimar, Dyesebel (sure Marian Rivera's pretty but her acting skills? Oh I forgot, we're talking about escapist TV here. Right.), Panday (remember this one? It was okay in the beginning but went pffft somewhere in the middle and completely died a natural death in the end), My Girl (my friend Amber went hopping mad about the ABS-CBN people butchering our favorite Koreanovela), and so on (sa dami ng ni-remake I can't remember anymore) and counting (because there are more remakes getting planned, as we speak, that's for sure). This isn't to say that all remakes are bad or to say that all production people are stupids, but haven't we had enough of remakes and spin offs already?
Now I've heard a lot of people raving about the Gabby Concepcion comeback soap opera Iisa Pa Lamang (did I get that title right) being a great remake. So far I've only managed to catch one episode and well, what can I say, Claudine Baretto and Angelica Panganiban are two of the better actresses their generation out there. And Gabby? I can understand why uh, Sharon and half the female population in the country went berserk for this guy in the 80's but I wanted to snap snap my fingers to his face while he was reciting his lines in that particular episode. What's up with the wooden acting, man? But then again, maybe he just wasn't feeling it that time huh. These actors, they're only hoomans too, right? Riiiiight.
So that's Philippine TV for you these days. Nothing new.
***
You guys remember sitcom Abangan Ang Susunod Na Kabanata? That was a gas! Also that talk show with Jessica Zafra, Mo Twister, Cher Calvin, and my crush daddy Teddy Boy Locsin, Jr.? (Okay, that wasn't a sitcom or series I just had to mention that because 1. I'm a fan of Ms. Zafra, 2. I schoolgirl crush Teddy Boy, and 3. I liked that show.) Remember that ABS-CBN series which starred Robin Padilla and Judy Ann Santos? I thought it was a good enough attempt to veer away from the usual nawawalang tagapagmana fairy tales we have. Sure it was no CSI (they're having Laurence Fishburne in the next season!) but at last that one didn't just go aiming for our tear ducts. So come on Philippine TV people, give us something new! (speaking of new, that Sarah Geronimo-John Lloyd Cruz starrer, A Very Special Love, was a cute movie. Was actually surprised that I enjoyed it -- except for Sarah's ugly wig and what's with the movie song title these days?? Geez.)
So how about a collaboration with either Taiwan or Korea, since we're pretty much crazy about their telenovelas? If you guys are running out of ideas my friend Amber has a fantastic idea for a storyline. Darn, I have ideas! Give us something to talk -- no, to rave about. Surprise us. Bewilder us. Play with our heads. Overwhelm us with emotion. Tickle us good. Challenge our beliefs. Make us think twice. Excite us!
How about you guys, what would you like to see on Philippine TV (or movie)?

...but Penelope, though critics weren't really crazy about it, is a great watch. I watched it last night at home and went to sleep smiling. It reminded me of my grade school days -- no, I didn't have a snout when I was a kid -- but I did went through some similar life experiences as Penelope (and could still be possibly experiencing some on a regular basis) and was just glad that the film could touch that part of my memory and not, or no longer hurt. =)
Also, James McAvoy is my new daddy, what a delicious.

Christina Ricci. I'll turn a lez for her, but I like boys (though they are funny characters).

When it comes to politics in the Philippines I can only think of about four words, three of them invectives. But if you're going to ask me if I want another impeachment today, the answer is no. Why? Because of what is waiting in the wings, as what Rom so clearheadedly and bestestly (inventing words much? lolz) talks about in her post today.
The other day I saw Jinggoy Estrada being interviewed in ANC (which seem to harbor a secret fanity for anything related to Erap these days). Erap's mini-me was cheekily answering reporters' questions about the possibility of him running for president in 2010, likening himself to his daddy ("nag-artista sya, nag-artista din ako; nagMayor sya, nagMayor din ako; nagpakulong sya, nagpakulong din ako; malaki tiyan nya, malaki din tiyan ko...")
Now that - is scary.
